Historical stronger variant: speculative expectation plus separate explanatory claim. Maintain internal separation without changing the retained package.

Why it sits here

The package contains two inferential burdens: a conditional expectation about life and an explanatory comparison. Smolin offers a dynamical ensemble account of stars and carbon chemistry while explicitly assuming a typical universe [S100]. Carter presents anthropic reasoning as observer weighting inside whichever theoretical model is being considered [S111]. These are not automatically competing explananda.

Principal uncertainty

Different anthropic principles carry different commitments. Generic observer conditioning may remain necessary even if a particular anthropic explanation loses its role. No calibrated probability of life follows from the retained literature.

What would change the view?

Require a bounded generative model and named comparator before commissioning. A robust expectation calculation would permit empirical assessment; the anti-anthropic inference still needs a separate conceptual argument.
